The 2013 Met Gala took place last evening, with the theme, Punk: Chaos to Couture, which meant spikes, mesh and black dominating the red carpet.
The Gala is an annual ball that celebrates the opening of the Metropolitan Museum‘s (The Met) fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute every season (May-August).The red carpet evening is where celebrities, models, designers and industry leaders arrive dressed to impress and is described as the fashion industry’s “Night of Nights”. Fashion industry experts and style magazines consider the event, which is hosted by Vogue, to be the fashion world’s best red carpet event. and is regarded as the top annual social event in New York City. The event has been an annual affair at the Met since 1948 (the year in which the Costume Institute was founded) and continues to be the highlight of the year when it comes to the fashion industry.
This years theme Punk: Chaos to Couture will examine punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the 1970s through its continuing influence today.
“The exhibition, will feature approximately 100 designs for men and women. Original punk garments from the mid-1970s will be juxtaposed with recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear have borrowed punk’s visual symbols, with paillettes being replaced with safety pins, feathers with razor blades, and bugle beads with studs. Focusing on the relationship between the punk concept of ‘do-it-yourself’ and the couture concept of ‘made-to-measure,’ the exhibition will be organized around the materials, techniques, and embellishments associated with the anti-establishment style.”
One day we hope to be there, but for now we will share with our best and worst picks from the evening.
